MEDIA RELEASE: AUSTRALIAN NAVY SHIP MAKES FRIENDLY VISIT TO SIHANOUKVILLE
Click here for Khmer Language version.
The Royal Australian Navy ship, HMAS ANZAC, will visit the Royal Kingdom of Cambodia from 10 - 13 September 2008. This visit reinforces the close links between Cambodia and Australia through the Australian Defence Cooperation Program and follows successful visits by Royal Australian Navy vessels in previous years: HMAS ADELAIDE in May 2007 and August 2005, HMAS TOOWOOMBA in April 2006, HMAS DARWIN in October 2004, HMAS DUBBO and HMAS GERALDTON in September 2004, and HMAS GASCOYNE and HMAS NORMAN in May 2003.
During the visit, the Commanding Officer of HMAS ANZAC, Captain Stuart Mayer, will pay courtesy calls on the Governor of Sihanoukville, His Excellency Say Hak, and the Commander of the Royal Cambodian Navy, His Excellency Vice Admiral Ung Samkhan.
While in Sihanoukville, Royal Australian Navy personnel will visit the Royal Cambodian Navy Marine Base at Ream where they will tour the base and share experiences with their Cambodian counterparts. The Australian crew are looking forward to the challenge of competing in a variety of sports against their Cambodian friends and visiting some of Cambodia's tourist destinations in the region before departure.
A particular highlight will be the fourth annual challenge match between an Australian Defence Forces (ADF) volleyball team and local champions the Kompong Speu BHP Billiton Scorpions, part of the Cambodian National Volleyball League for the Disabled. An ADF team has challenged a Kompong Speu team during the last three ship visits to Sihanoukville, but is yet to enjoy the fruits of victory against the locals!
HMAS ANZAC is a modern warship based on the design of the German Meko 200 Class frigate. This class of ship is a long-range escort, and plays a role in the tasks of air defence, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance, and interdiction.

There will be a media briefing and photograph opportunities in Sihanoukville on 10 September 2008. Media staff interested in attending these opportunities are requested to register interest with the Australian Embassy on 023 213 470 ext 209.
